An osteometric approach to reconstruct the length and weight of Lutjanus argentiventris (Perciformes: Lujtanidae) for archaeological and ecological purposes Neotropical Ichthyology
Martínez-Polanco,María Fernanda; Béarez,Philippe.
ABSTRACT Lutjanus argentiventris presents a large intertropical distribution within the Eastern Pacific, which is as important to fisheries now as it was in the pre-Hispanic period. The purpose of this article is to present an allometric model that enables the size and weight of L. argentiventris to be predicted, using the isolated bones found in archaeological and paleontological contexts or the stomach contents of ichthyophagous species. A modern collection of L. argentiventris from Ecuador was used, composed of 37 individuals covering a wide range of sizes and weights. The total length (TL), standard length (SL), and total fresh weight (W) of each individual was gathered. The TL of the sample ranged between 210 and 760 mm, the SL between 164 and 627 mm...

An Osteometric Study on Humerus International Journal of Morphology
Aydin Kabakci,A. D; Buyukmumcu,M; Yilmaz,M. T; Cicekcibasi,A. E; Akin,D; Cihan,E.
Humerus is the longest and thickest bone of the upper limb. As a long bone, it has two epiphysis and diaphysis. In this study, we aimed to conduct morphometric measurements belonging to human humerus. This study was conducted on 60 humerus (28 right, 32 left) in collections of Necmettin Erbakan University Meram Medicine Faculty Anatomy Laboratory. Digital calipers, osteometric board and precision scales for humerus bone measurements were used. Measurements were classified as measurements of diaphysis and proximal and distal epiphysis of humerus. Each bone weight was determined. Also nutrient foramen number and localization was determined. In this study, it was determined that mean right humerus length 30.41±1.73 mm, mean left humerus length 30.04±2.39 mm....

Morphometric Analysis of the Greater Palatine Foramen in Dry Southern Brazilian Adult Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Lopes,P. T. C; Santos,A. M. P. V; Pereira,G. A. M; Oliveira,V. C. B. D.
The greater palatine foramen (GPF) conducts the greater palatine nerve, responsible for the innervation of the posterior hard palate. The morphometric knowledge of the GPF is essential in the anesthetic interventions required in maxillofacial surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the location and shape of the GPF in dry skulls of adults from Southern Brazil. Male (n = 65) and female (n = 29) skulls were studied, and the distance measurements from the middle of the GPF to the mid-sagittal plane (MSP) and to the posterior border of the hard palate (PBHP) were analyzed using a digital caliper and a ruler. The mean GPF-MSP distance in the right and in left sides of male skulls were 15.6 mm and 15.4 mm, respectively, and in female skulls,...

On Biometrical Aspects of the Cephalic Anatomy of Xisqueta Sheep (Catalunya, Spain) International Journal of Morphology
Parés, I. Casanova,P. M; Kamal,Sarma; Jordana,J.
This study, based on a 48 Xisqueta skull samples, gives a statistical insight of the skull shape in this breed. Thirty eight measurements and eight indexes were recorded. The variance structure was done using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This was possible sequel to the application and permission of the covariance matrix. The mean length of the skulls was found to be 265.51±22.24 mm, with the width and cephalic index to the magnitude of 117.2 ± 6.89 mm and 44.69 ± 4.29 mm, respectively. The viscerocranium length was 143.07±9.74 mm thus indicating a similar portion with the neurocranium part of the skull (137.17 ± 6.25 mm). The orbit was slightly almond shaped. Variability was generally high within parameters but parameter variation was less in...

Osteometric Studies of the Skull of Red Sokoto (Maradi) Goats (Capra hircus): Implications for Regional Anaesthesia of the Head International Journal of Morphology
Olopade,J. O.; Onwuka,S. K..
The study involved the measurements of some clinically important landmarks for regional anesthesia in the head of twenty five Red Sokoto goats. The length and maximum height of the mandibles were 12.7cm and 7.7cm respectively. The distance from the mandibular foramen to the base of the mandible was 3.0cm while the distance between the lateral alveolar root and mental foramen and from the facial tuberosity to the infra-orbital foramen was 1.8cm in both instances. The data was discussed with regard to its importance in proper tracking of some nerves in aid of regional anaesthetic procedures in the head of the Red Sokoto goat and was compared with our results reported for the West African Dwarf breed

Osteometry and Morphology of the Human Fibula: A South African Study International Journal of Morphology
Naidoo,N; Ishwarkumar,S; Lazarus,L; Pillay,P; Satyapal,K. S.
Recent studies have regarded the fibula flap as the benchmark for the reconstruction and treatment of compound wounds and lesions. Owing to its postero-lateral location within the leg, the application of the fibula flap is deemed aesthetically advantageous as the donor scar can be easily hidden. Since the fibula is anatomically characterized by a shaft and two extremities, this study aimed to investigate the nutrient foramen morphology and the relative fibular osteometry. Osteometric and morphological evaluation of 104 dry human fibulae, representing male and female individuals of the Black and Caucasian population groups that are native to South Africa, were conducted (Age range: 15 81 years old). The presence of single, double and six nutrient foramina...

Posterior Slope of Tibial Plateau in Adult Nigerian Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Didia,Blessing C; Jaja,Blessing N. R.
Normal values of the tibial slope are necessary for realignment of displaced fractures of the tibia crest, repair of cruciate ligaments and correction of knee deformities. True lateral radiographs of normal knees were obtained in 119 males and 93 female Nigerian subjects. The tibial slope was then measured according to the anterior tibial cortex method. Mean angle in sampled subjects was 12.3 ± 4.90 (range: 0-240). Sex differences were statistically insignificant (p>0.05). This study provides reference values of tibial slope among indigenous adult Nigerians. It also highlights on the clinical relevance of the angle and the need to establish normal ranges in other African populations.
